Meet Arthur Smith!
Clay Smith grew up in the entertainment business. He started playing mandolin at an early age and moved to guitar. Of course, his father Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith was a pretty good teacher to have under the same roof. As a kid he had the fortune of hanging out in his father's recording studio (the first of its kind in the Carolinas) where he witnessed the talent of such artists as Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Chet Atkins, Flatt & Scruggs, Mac Wiseman, Maurice Williams, General Johnson, The O'Kaysions, and the Swingin' Medallions. He experienced the recording session of James Brown when he cut his smash hit, "Papa's Gotta Brand New Bag." Clay attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Upon graduation he began working at his father’s firm, Arthur Smith Enterprises, and quickly attained the role of Producer for the nationally syndicated Arthur Smith Show. As a singer-songwriter he signed with Monument Records. CMA Hall of Fame producer Fred Foster produced two albums with Clay. As an artist he had the distinct privilege as an opening act for a Johnny Cash Southern Tour. Subsequently, Clay signed on as General Manager of Johnny Cash’s entertainment companies House of Cash and Song of Cash, administrating an overhaul of the company’s technology and communications.
As an Executive Producer, Clay became one of the original program suppliers to ESPN. He built an impressive stable of entertainment and sports programming as head of Entertainment for Jefferson-Pilot Communications. Production credits include ABC, CBS, ESPN, FOX, USA, and national syndication. Now, as CEO of Arthur Smith, Clay manages entertainers and professional athletes. He also serves as Managing Director of Clay Music Corp., a global music publishing company.
